Jigs: The Rambling and Sporting Pitchforks

(Chris Smith (banjo), Randal Bays (fiddle), Roger Landes (bouzouki))
2005-09-08
In rural Ireland, a “pitchfork” was slang for a wandering laborer: a man who was ready to work for his board and lodging would turn up in the market square, with his “weapon” (a spade, rake, or fork) over his shoulder, thus signaling his availability for hire. “The Pitchforks” appear paired in this order on an incredible 1978 disc by “The Two Paddy’s” (Glackin and Keenan) with the wonderfully Joycean title Doublin’, but I might have got the first tune from an equally incredible (if very trebly) trio disc by Matt Molloy, Tommy Peoples, and Paul Brady. The latter tune appears in Bulmer & Shipley III as #56.
